Circuit Court Records: Where to Find Them

Circuit court records are state court records and are kept on websites provided by the area in which the circuit court has jurisdiction or by the state government itself.  There are many reasons that circuit court records are listed and made available to the public.

Many people find it useful to glance at the circuit court records to determine if their name or address is being used mistakenly.  Each state has its own guidelines to have your identity removed from a docket or court record when it is used mistakenly or through identity theft, but they usually involve filling out an affidavit and submitting various forms to the court.  Keeping an eye on the circuit court records for your area can be a great way to help prevent potentially costly legal mistakes.

Circuit court records are also used in other areas such as statistics for the county, state and nation.  These records are used to track different legal proceedings, both criminal and civil and compare the ratio, outcome and frequency to those of other areas and to establish averages, which can be applied to the state, county and nation.

Circuit court records are often open to the public, in whole or in part, and can be found online or by paying the courthouse in the county seat a visit.  In addition to the reasons listed above, you'll find that circuit court records are listed publicly to allow others to more easily access them.  Lawyers, private investigators and even employers often have a need to access these records.  The vast amount of information they provide can be valuable to each of these areas and can help further investigations by different agencies around the country. Circuit court records can also be used to set legal precedence, in addition to providing vital information.

You can find a lot of information for circuit court records, from previous criminal history of defendants to specific crimes and civil complaints that are relative to certain areas of the country.  These are especially helpful when compiling data on specific geographic areas of the country and what the crime rates and civil complaints in that area are.  This is good for determining if new facilities are needed in the area, how well the location would serve as a residential relocation area and more.

Circuit court records are easily accessed via state and county websites.
