Finding Information through Probate Records

Probate courts are usually in charge of proving a will and making the last wishes of the deceased a reality.  They are also in charge of administering estates of the deceased when there is no will present or when the will is contested by survivors. Probate court records are incredibly comprehensive, with lists of living and dead, addresses and lost heirs.  Each court is like a treasure trove of information, open to the public.

Probate court records are a great place to start a search for information. Whether you're starting a people search to find long lost relatives and trace your ancestry, trying to find friends and loved ones that have disappeared over the years or beginning a background search on a potential date or an employee.  Probate court records are the starting point for all of this and more.

Probate court records can be a valuable resource to businesses and individuals alike.  Businesses can utilize these records for a number of different purposes.  Credit card companies can utilize them to find the heir or beneficiary to an estate to collect on debts from the deceased.  Other debt holders can use these records for the same purpose.

Individuals can access this information for many other uses.  People searches are probably one of the most popular uses for probate court records.  These can take many different forms.  Whether searching for living or dead relatives, friends and neighbors or simply searching for information on someone whom you have just met, probate court records can be a great asset.

Probate court records can be accessed in many different ways.  The traditional way is to write a letter of inquiry to the clerk of courts or another official in charge of record keeping.  This can take several weeks, up to ten weeks in some cases.  If it is especially hard to find records that are needed, it can take additional time; you will be notified in writing.  The other way to find this information is to pay a visit to the probate court records building, though this usually takes just as long.  The easiest and fastest way to find the records that are needed is through the Internet.  With the trend of putting more and more information on the Internet has moved to the court system, now.  With public access granted, these records have been placed online for easy access.
