Who Needs Divorce Records?

Divorce records are another form of vital record. Along with marriage records, death records and birth records, divorce records form part of a vital picture of a person's life as well as providing much needed information to the state or county's offices.  There are many reasons that divorce records are needed, though the amount of information kept in databases can vary greatly by state.

Divorce records are necessary and are maintained by state and county agencies.  These records are searched when a new marriage license is being issued to act as a safeguard to make sure that any marriages of the two individuals have ended and a record is on file concerning it.  Divorce records are also necessary for many other industries.

Insurance- Divorce records are necessary for insurance companies providing life insurance.  You should notify the company that provides your life insurance policy and health insurance immediately following the filing of the divorce. You may be required to provide the companies with divorce records as proof of the finality of the divorce.

Credit card companies- Credit card companies are another industry that will require notification of a divorce.  These may also require divorce records be sent to them to adequately update their records and billing departments.

Banks and financial institutions- These institutions may require divorce records and will definitely require notification of the divorce.  There may also be other documents that require a signature or other correspondence.

Divorce records are a necessary vital record that must be tracked by the state and local government.  There are safeguards in place to help protect privacy, but a divorce decree is often considered an item in the public domain, and as such, many people can access this decree without having to be personally involved with either spouse or even the family.

Divorce records once had to be received from the county authority where the divorce was finalized, but with the increase of Internet usage, many of these documents are becoming widely available over the Internet.  You can find them in numerous places online, as well as through the websites of the state where the divorce was granted.  While many of these websites do not actually produce a finalized divorce decree, divorce records can be read online and many websites will allow you to purchase copies of the divorce records for your own use.  The divorce decree itself can usually only be gained from the issuing or filing office.
